What is IFTA?
The International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) is an agreement among the 48 U.S. states and all 10 Canadian provinces.
It dramatically simplifies fuel tax reporting for carriers who travel in multiple jurisdictions. Instead of getting separate permits and filing tax reports in every single state, IFTA allows you to:
Operate under a single IFTA license.
File one quarterly fuel tax report with your “base jurisdiction.”
This report details all miles traveled and all fuel purchased in every IFTA jurisdiction.
How IFTA Reporting Works
You buy fuel as usual, and the taxes you pay at the pump are “credited” to your account.
At the end of each quarter, we collect your mileage and fuel purchase data.
We calculate the tax you owe to each state (based on miles driven there) versus the tax you paid in that state.
This gives you a net amount you either owe or are owed a refund.
Your base jurisdiction handles all the money, refunding you for overpayments or collecting what you owe and distributing it to the other states.
This entire system relies on a perfectly accurate and timely quarterly report—which is what we prepare for you.
Who Needs an IFTA License?
Not all vehicles are subject to IFTA. You are required to have an IFTA license and file quarterly reports if your vehicle:
Is used to transport people or property, AND
Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) that exceeds 26,000 lbs., OR
Has three or more axles, regardless of weight, OR
Is used in a combination (like a tractor-trailer) and the combined gross vehicle weight exceeds 26,000 lbs.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to file your IFTA report, filing late, or underpaying can attract a penalty of $50 or 10% of the total tax due, whichever is greater. On top of that, interest will be applied to any amount owed to each jurisdiction.
Don’t risk penalties and audits. Let us handle it for you.
